The summer transfer deadline has now finished, and Championship clubs can now fully focus on the 2019-20 season with the fixtures about to come thick and fast.
It was a traditional busy deadline day, with several clubs such as Fulham, Derby County, Cardiff City and Bristol City bringing players in as they seek to add the final touches to a hopeful promotion squad.
But not all the deals were what supporters were expecting. Here we take a look at five of the most bizarre deadline day transfers, starting with the day’s big-money signing Bobby Reid.
Bobby Reid joins Fulham:
Cardiff City’s Bobby Reid has signed for Fulham on an initial loan deal which is expected to become permanent for a reported £10 million, according to Wales Online.
It seems strange Cardiff would allow a top Championship attacker to join a direct promotion rival. Fulham, meanwhile, may not be able to guarantee him a first-team start.
Many feel that, with Aleksandar Mitrovic, Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro, the Whites are set in the final third. Fulham boss Scott Parker has a job on his hands accommodating the four of them.
Jamie Paterson joins Derby County:
Derby County have signed Jamie Paterson on a season-long loan deal from Bristol City. Again, it’s a strange move for the Robins to allow a first-teamer from last season to join a direct top six rival.
The Rams were on the lookout for a new winger. They finally landed on Paterson, but it may take a while for some supporters to warm to him as the former Nottingham Forest man openly claimed he doesn’t like Derby.
Benik Afobe joins Bristol City:
Bristol City left it late to sign Benik Afobe from Stoke City on loan. The 26-year-old was once a top hitter in the Championship, but has struggled in recent seasons, with his debut season at the Potters a near disaster.
Afobe scored just eight goals in 45 league games last season at Stoke. Bristol City hold the option to sign him permanently, but first manager Lee Johnson must find room for him.
Striker Famara Diedhiou seems a very similar sort of player, and on last season’s showing many would suggest the Senegal international is arguably the better of the two.
Beram Kayal joins Charlton Athletic:
Charlton Athletic have pulled off arguably the best deadline day deal by bringing in Beram Kayal on a season-long loan deal from Brighton and Hove Albion.
Kayal helped the Seagulls to promotion, but gradually fell out of favour at the Amex Stadium. The former Celtic man is still a top player and it is surprising a club with bigger ambitions than the Addicks didn’t come in for him.
Charlton boss Lee Bowyer even admitted to the club’s official website he didn’t think it was going to happen because of his qualities. The London club have pulled off a real coup here.
Aaron Mooy joins Brighton and Hove Albion:
Arguably the most bizarre transfer of the day, however, goes to Aaron Mooy. The Australian midfielder has joined Brighton on a season-long loan from Huddersfield Town, but not before signing a new contract with the Terriers.
Mooy’s previous deal was set to expire next summer. You can understand Huddersfield wanting him to extend his contract, but usually this sort of scenario plays out when a youngster drops down the leagues on loan for experience.
But Mooy, 28, has been allowed to move back to the Premier League. Brighton have potentially missed out on being able to sign him for a cheaper fee, while Huddersfield have arguably lost their best player. Weird.
