Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has taken to Twitter to show pictures of his return to training, and Spurs fans have responded with encouraging comments.

The Belgium international has barely featured since picking up a lengthy injury in the 3-1 home win over Real Madrid in the Champions League back in November.

While Spurs progressed to the knockout stages and have maintained their push for a top four spot in the Premier League, the North London club have no doubt missed his presence at the back.

Alderweireld has managed to feature in the FA Cup ties with Newport and Rochdale over the past month, but niggles and setbacks have prevented him from making a full recovery.

The 29-year-old joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid back in 2015, and over the past three seasons he has established himself as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League.

Playing alongside fellow Belgium international Jan Vertonghen, the duo have struck up a formidable partnership and, with summer signing Davinson Sanchez impressing during his debut campaign at the club, Spurs have an abundance of quality at the back.

Having said that, fans evidently rate the player as their number one centre-back and it is not difficult to see why, with the club boasting such an impressive defensive record with him in the starting XI.

As shown by the table provided by Opta Stats, since the start of last season Alderweireld boasts the best record in terms of goals conceded per league encounter he has been involved in.
