Everton have been linked with a move for Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.
According to a report in The Sun, Everton and Huddersfield Town are among the Premier League clubs interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.
The Ivory Coast international has been an icon for Manchester City since moving to the Etihad Stadium, winning three Premier League titles among other honours – but his contract is to expire this summer.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed the player will leave the club, yet Toure is said to be settled in England and willing to remain in the Premier League – alerting the attentions of Everton.
Under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri, Everton have the financial backing to challenge for a top six spot in the Premier League, but such funds need to be invested wisely with the club already guilty of overspending.
Last summer, the Toffees spent big to bring in Gylfi Sigurdsson while Wayne Rooney made his return to Everton, joining from Manchester United on a £160,000-per-week deal (Spotrac).
Both Sigurdsson and Rooney are earning more than Tottenham Hotspur’s highest earner Harry Kane (£100,000 per week according to Spotrac), yet the difference in contribution is huge.
While Everton spent big on ageing players, Spurs in contrast have invested heavily in players with enormous potential – and it’s a philosophy which has seen them become an established Champions League club.
The Toffees need to develop a similar method if they are to bridge the gap, while buying top quality youngsters and selling them on for huge profits down the line (such as Gareth Bale) allows for further investment.
Everton’s current strategy us surely flawed, as aging players on big wages have very little re-sale value. Adding 34-year-old Yaya Toure to their ranks, a player currently earning £220,000 per week (Spotrac), probably wouldn’t be a smart move.
And what about the opportunity cost of signing Toure ? Would it make it harder for 19-year-old Tom Davies to play regularly for the club ? football? And Davy Klaassen, 25, is another who needs more time to adjust to the rigours of Premier League football.
Everton would surely be mad to bring Toure in.
