Derby County are in desperate need for a new winger, and one man who has taken the Championship by storm this season with eight goals and 10 assists could be the answer to their prayers.
Cardiff City’s Junior Hoilett has been in terrific form for the Bluebirds, and in today’s market his current ability plus the performances he has displayed this term would normally fetch a figure nearing £10 million.
Derby may not have that much money available to spend on one particular player this coming summer, but Hoilett’s current contract situation at the Welsh club means they wouldn’t have to.
The talented winger’s deal in the Welsh capital is set to expire, and despite Wales Online reporting talks over a new contract began last month, there haven’t been any developments on that front for a while now.
Hoilett is free to talk to other clubs, and Derby would be mad not to at least try and seek a deal for a player who could replace the recently departed Johnny Russell and solve one major issue at Pride Park.
Since Russell’s move to the MLS, Derby have struggled for creativity and right now the East Midlands club can only count on three senior wide players – Tom Lawrence, Andreas Weimann and Ikechi Anya.
Anya has barely featured this term as he was previously deemed not good enough, yet Russell’s departure has seen him come back into the fold while Weimann is no doubt a better player through the middle.
The Rams must strengthen the wide areas this summer and bringing in the former Queens Park Rangers man on a free transfer could be a stroke of genius.
The 27-year-old has been a pivotal figure in Cardiff’s promotion push this season, scoring eight goals and grabbing 10 assists, and Derby have the financial means to surely trump his current wages.
