Derby County lost 2-0 to Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Derby County supporters have taken to social networking site Twitter to blast the players following their disappointing performance in the 2-0 defeat to Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves, with the help of influential super-agent Jorge Mendes, have put together a team far too good for the Championship and their 11-point lead at the top illustrates how they are simply a class above.
Derby went to Molineux knowing a draw would be an excellent return following their recent struggles, but their intentions to sit back, soak up pressure and counter were thwarted within six minutes of kick off.
Diego Jota gave the hosts the lead after collecting a simple ball over the top, and from then on it was an uphill struggle for the Rams as their lack of movement through the middle and creativity told.
Derby struggled to get near Wolves’ penalty area, with a blasted Tom Lawrence freekick into the wall from 25-yards their only real chance before Ruben Neves doubled the host’s lead early in the second period.
At 2-0 it was all-but game over for Derby, but despite the gulf in the quality, supporters expect at a very minimum a clear show of desire and effort to get back in to the game and that didn’t appear evident at all.
Derby’s Twitter account posed the question to fans asking: ‘What would you say to the players if you were the boss?’ five minutes ahead of kick-off. It was a major blunder considering the ensuing performance and supporters let their frustrations be known.
Gary Rowett has done an excellent job when taking into account the lack of room to manoeuvre in the transfer market and the quality of squad he took over, but it’s the performances which are the major concern.
With Derby sitting in fifth position, many believe results have masked over several poor displays and such a boring, negative style of football has no long-term benefits – especially when played against better opposition.
The players at Rowett’s disposal aren’t of the highest quality for Championship standards, therefore the former Birmingham City boss is arguably only playing the cards he has been dealt, but with the summer on the horizon and players expected to leave, fans will demand a more entertaining style of football next season.
