Derby County’s Kelle Roos played a key role in Aston Villa’s recent play-off final victory.
Aston Villa supporters have responded to Derby County’s tweet wishing goalkeeper Kelle Roos happy birthday by mocking the Dutch goalkeeper following his gaffe in the recent Championship play-off final.
Villa got the better of Derby at Wembley, winning 2-1. However, over the 90 minutes, there was very little between the teams and it was the Rams who ended the game in the ascendancy and carrying all the momentum.
Ultimately, Villa were clinical when it mattered, and Derby were not. Anwar El Ghazi’s brave header in the first-half gave Villa the lead and they doubled their advantage as they capitalised on an error from Rams shot-stopper Kelle Roos ten minutes after half time.
Th 6ft 5inch Derby ‘keeper tried to claim a deflected shot that spun high in the Derby area, yet he was beaten to the ball by 5ft 7inch John McGinn who nodded into an empty net.
As the Midlands side sent Roos a message on Twitter wishing him a happy birthday, Villa fans have swooped in to also send him their regards after his Wembley contribution…while warning him not to drop the cake.
Roos’s contract at Derby expires this summer and there is still no confirmation he will be at Pride Park beyond the summer.
The 26-year-old was originally signed as an understudy, but he has earned a regular spot at Derby during the second half of this past season as former number one Scott Carson struggled with injuries.
Many Derby supporters feel Roos deserves to have his contract extended after several impressive displays, but his Wembley woe may now prompt the club to look at bringing in a new number one this summer.
