Reading’s Marc McNulty’s future at the club reportedly unclear, a situation which could alert Sunderland.

According to a report in the Reading Chronicle, several Reading players could depart this month with out-of-favour striker Marc McNulty listed among them – a situation which should alert Sunderland.

The report claims new manager Jose Gomes is looking to make room available for new additions, and McNulty has been cited for a potential return to League One playoff chasers Coventry to solve their goalscoring issues.

Coventry aren’t the only side with problems finding the net, with Sunderland having scored just six times in their last six games in all competitions, as the Black Cats seek an immediate return to the Championship.

Jack Ross’s side are currently third in League One, but their promotion hopes could rest on whether they can keep top scorer Josh Maja – who has 14 league goals – at the club beyond the January transfer window.

The 20-year-old’s contract expires in the summer and recent reports in the Sun claim Crystal Palace are leading the race for his signature, with the forward apparently turning down a new deal at the Stadium of Light.

Losing Maja could seriously hinder Sunderland’s promotion charge, but bringing in McNulty may soften the blow – while managing to pair the two upfront could be their golden ticket back to the Championship.

McNulty’s move to Reading from Coventry in the summer hasn’t been a success, but not all the blame can be placed on him with, the Royals lying 23rd in the league table and struggling for any sort of form. The 25-year-old was a big hit for Coventry last season, netting 23 goals in League Two as the Sky Blues earned promotion.
