Derby County’s Marcus Olsson has struggled to impress this season.

Derby County fullback Marcus Olsson could have already played his last game for the club as the Rams look set to make numerous changes this summer as they wish to reshape the squad.
The two-capped Sweden international joined the Rams from Blackburn Rovers back in 2016, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal meaning his current contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2019.
Despite having 15 months left to run on his current deal, however, Olsson just doesn’t seem to fit in and Derby’s recent 3-1 victory over Cardiff City was seemingly the last throw of the dice for the player.
Playing in a new system featuring three centre-backs, Olsson was handed his second start in succession – his 13th of the campaign – as a left wingback but like the defeat against Middlesbrough, he was largely ineffective.

With Derby trailing 1-0, Rowett opted to haul the 29-year-old off and throw on Matej Vydra, pushing former Aston Villa striker Andreas Weimann to left wingback where he looked a far bigger threat.
Considering Weimann’s preference is to play as a number nine, he worked tirelessly down the left flank and his pace, mobility and general work-rate meant he looked far more useful there than Olsson.
It’s likely Rowett will opt for Weimann to remain there for Derby’s trip to Aston Villa, while Craig Forsyth, despite featuring on the left side of a back three, is also an option as well as Ikechi Anya.

It’s a position where there are options, not least academy product Max Lowe who is currently out on loan, therefore Olsson will surely become surplus to requirements this summer if not already.
The former Blackburn Rovers man isn’t getting any younger, turning 30 next month, and with the club seemingly keen to lower the average age of the squad there is further reason to let him go this summer.
Derby aren’t expected to get any sort of return on the player, though saving on his wages will certainly make up for that with owner Mel Morris warning against any big spending should the club remain in the Championship.
