Chelsea trio named in a Belgian XI of the year

Chelsea stars Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku have been named in a statistical Belgian XI of the season by Whoscored.com.

According to famed statistical website Whoscored.com, Chelsea have three stars which have been included in the Belgian XI of the year.

The first player to make the list is Chelsea shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois who has spent the last three years out on loan at Atletico Madrid.

The 22-year-old has been phenomenal for Diego Simeone’s men this season, and the Blues supporters witnessed first-hand how good he is during Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final clash with the Madrid-based outfit.

In Spain, Courtois is set to win the Zamora trophy – an award given to the goalkeeper who has conceded the least amount of La Liga goals over the season. Courtois has only been beaten 25 times in 37 league matches, and he has kept an incredible 20 clean sheets.

The Belgian international’s loan spell in the Spanish capital is up at the end of the season, and he is expected to return to Stamford Bridge and challenge Petr Cech for the Chelsea number one jersey.

Chelsea’s flying winger Eden Hazard also made the Belgian XI after terrorising Premier League defences this season.

Over the course of the Premier League campaign, the 23-year-old completed 132 successful dribbles, scored 14 goals and added a further seven assists.

His performances were enough for him to take home the Premier League Young Player of the Year award, and boss Jose Mourinho will be hoping that he can keep up his high standards next season.

The final Chelsea star to make the Belgian XI is 21-year-old centre-forward Romelu Lukaku after spending he season on loan at Everton.

Jose Mourinho surprised many last summer when he allowed Lukaku to leave, and it was a decision which proved costly given Chelsea’s struggles upfront and the former Anderlecht’s sparkling form on Merseyside.

The Toffees gained all the advantages of having Lukaku on a season-long loan deal, and his 15 goals and six assists in 29 Premier League starts makes him Europe’s most effective striker under the age of 21.

All three players have question marks over their future, but given their young age, it will be a big shock if they aren’t a permanent fixture in Chelsea’s XI in the not too distant future.
