Blackburn Rovers’ Charlie Mulgrew has signed a new contract at the club.
Ex-Celtic utility man Charlie Mulgrew has told reporters how he is delighted to sign a new contract at Blackburn Rovers, which could take him up to his final year as a professional, the Lancashire Telegraph report.
“It was pretty straightforward as Rovers is a club I want to be at. I’ve loved every minute of being here, it’s a great club to be at and a club that’s doing well,” Mulgrew explained. “It’s the perfect place to be, so I’m delighted to stay.”
Mulgrew, 32, came through the Celtic youth system and spent a total of 12 years over two spells at the club, making over 130 Scottish Premiership appearances, with stints at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aberdeen in-between.
The Scotland international finally departed the Hoops in the summer of 2016 following the expiration of his contract, and he went on to sign a three-year deal with Blackburn Rovers.
Mulgrew immediately impressed at Ewood Park and drew reported interest from Sheffield Wednesday the following summer (The Sun on Sunday print edition, page 59, July 23, 2017) following Rovers’ relegation.
But he opted to stay in Lancashire, helping Blackburn return to the Championship. His role at Ewood Park hasn’t gone unnoticed, with former Celtic man Chris Sutton questioning whether Celtic should have kept hold of him earlier this season.
Sutton’s Tweet caused some Celtic fans to agree, suggesting his ability to play at central defence, as a holding midfielder or out wide, could have been handy for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season.
But Mulgrew’s new contract extension at Blackburn takes him up to 2021 – when he will be 35 years of age. The chances of him ever lacing up his boots for Celtic again in a competitive match now appear slim.
