Celtic beat Steven Gerrard’s Rangers 1-0 at Celtic Park last week.

Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to question Jurgen Klopp’s comments after the Liverpool boss says Rangers have closed the gap on their Old Firm rivals following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager.

“He made a brilliant start at Ibrox – then he lost against Celtic. Wow, what a surprise! Celtic are the top team in the league but it’s not like they were 50 or 60 per cent better than Rangers – like they have been in the last few years. Rangers are getting closer and that’s the only way to get them one day. That’s Steven’s job but so far it’s more than good,” Klopp was quoted as saying by the Daily Record.

Celtic have won domestic trebles in both of their campaigns under former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, but Rangers will now be hoping to put an end to their dominance with Gerrard at the helm.

But despite a positive start and a 12-game unbeaten run, the Hoops again showed their superiority during the recent Old Firm derby as they ran out 1-0 winners when it could have been much more.

Taking to Twitter to respond to Klopp’s comments, some Celtic fans have questioned whether the German actually watched the recent clash at Celtic Park as they suggest he is wide of the mark.

Rangers’ impressive run to the Europa League group stages coupled with Celtic’s early Champions League exit suggests the gap could be closing, but you can look at it from different angles.

Gerrard has made an impact at Ibrox as the Gers appear more competitive, yet in the Scottish Premiership their return of just five points from four matches is among their worst league starts in decades.

It’s too soon to say whether the gap between the clubs has really closed or not, and only when Rangers start winning silverware again can they really look to knock Celtic off their perch at the top of Scottish football.
