Blackburn Rovers-supporting Frank Fielding is out of contract at Bristol City this summer.
Blackburn Rovers may be able to strengthen their goalkeeping options this summer by bringing back former academy player Frank Fielding with his contract at Bristol City set to expire this summer.
Fielding came through the youth ranks at Rovers but failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Ewood Park club before departing for Derby County on a permanent transfer.
Fast-forward eight years and the 30-year-old shot-stopper could be a viable option to make a return to the Lancashire club this season, with Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray reportedly a keen admirer.
According to a report in the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray weighed up a move for Fielding last summer as he looks to add competition to regular number one David Raya.
Mowbray has utilised former Shrewsbury Town man Jayson Leutwiler as Raya’s understudy, but the Canadian international is out of contract this summer and could make way for more genuine competition.
Fielding, a self-proclaimed Blackburn fan who admitted growing up watching the likes of Tim Flowers, Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton and Colin Hendry shine at Ewood Park, would certainly fit the bill.
The experienced former England U21 international has made over 150 appearance for Bristol City, but this season he has largely been overlooked, making just five Championship starts.
Fielding has been on the winning side in five of the Robins seven games in all competitions he has featured in this term, conceding just six goals with three of those coming at Championship leaders Norwich City.
Rovers signing him on a free transfer this summer would make plenty of sense, and Fielding may see at as a fitting move as he looks ahead to the final stages of his career.
