Brighton and Hove Albion are among the best teams in Europe when it comes to making interceptions, with only one other club from Europe’s top five leagues averaging more per game.

According to statistical website Whoscored, Brighton rank second in Europe with an average of 18.5 interceptions per game – just shy of Bundesliga side Hannover 96, who top the charts with an average of 20 per game.

The Seagulls impressed as they comfortably avoided relegation from the Premier League last season, and boss Chris Hughton looked to strengthen his side during the summer with several new signings.

The south coast club brought in the likes of Yves Bissouma, Florin Andone, Martin Montoya and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, spending over £50 million.

And so far, Brighton have picked up four points from four tough matches, including a 3-2 home victory over Premier League title challengers Manchester United.

Brighton don’t always dominate possession, but fans are fully supportive of their committed and hardworking playing style as they harry off the ball and close down the spaces.

New signing Bernardo tops the list of interceptions per game alongside defender Shane Duffy – averaging three per game – while as many as seven different players average over two per league encounter.

It’s an impressive statistic and one which Hughton will want to build on, as having a strong defensive record and players working tirelessly off the ball will help the club in its bid to once again retain its Premier League status and move up the table.
