Bolton Wanderers assistant boss Steve Parkin says the club’s younger players must show more after a study illustrated the lack of game time given to the club’s youth players this season, Bolton News reports.

“They have to be able to cope with the speed, the physicality of this league. You have to feel they are ready and if they are then Phil (Parkinson) will give them a chance.” Parkin explained.

“There are two or three decent ones, more in fact, but you have to be crystal clear that it is the right time to put them in.”

According to an online study done by The Ninety Two, Bolton are the lowest club outside the Premier League for giving minutes to players 23 years of age or younger.

The Trotters have managed to offer just 1,954 minutes of football to their young players, with the bulk of those given to Joe Williams who has arrived on a season-long loan deal from Everton.

Bolton are currently in the Championship’s bottom three having won just once since September. The club’s poor form and lack of goals have placed question marks over manager Phil Parkinson.

Following the study, some supporters may have further reason to be frustrated as it appears little game-time is being given to the club’s academy stars with Luca Connell and Joe Pritchard possible options.

Bolton have the likes of Jack Hobbs, Andrew Taylor, Ben Alnwick, David Wheater, Marc Wilson, Gary O’Neil, Craig Noone and Clayton Donaldson who are all in their thirties and featuring regularly.

Despite their experience, however, Bolton remain deep in relegation trouble and, with just 19 goals scored in 30 games, supporters have had little to cheer about this season.
