Blackburn Rovers may now regret snubbing reported £1m deal for Marcus Antonsson

Blackburn Rovers reportedly had an option to sign Marcus Antonsson from Leeds United.

According to a report from FotbollDirekt, Bundesliga sides are set to watch former Leeds United attacker Marcus Antonsson – eight months after Blackburn Rovers reportedly snubbed the chance to sign him.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Rovers, making 34 League One appearances as Tony Mowbray’s men won promotion back to the Championship.

The Lancashire Telegraph claims Antonsson had a clause in his loan contract allowing Blackburn to sign him permanently last summer for £1 million, but Rovers seemingly opted against it.

Antonsson since returned to his homeland with Malmo where he has scored 11 goals in 21 games, helping the club to the Swedish title while reaching the second phase of the Europa League.

His form has reportedly attracted interest from Germany’s top-flight, but Malmo are said to want around £3.4 million for his signature – more than three times the amount Blackburn could have signed him for.

The Lancashire club may now be regretting their decision to opt against bringing him in, considering his form since returning to his native Sweden and the subsequent interest in his services.

Blackburn are stacked in the striker department with Bradley Dack, Ben Brereton, Adam Armstrong and Danny Graham for options, but Antonsson on current form would have made a worthy inclusion.

With Graham turning 34 in August, Rovers may need to look at signing another attacking option this coming summer with the idea of being his long-term replacement.
