Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray suggests Leeds United are weak at set-pieces

Blackburn Rovers dealt Leeds United their first league defeat on the road this season.

Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray says he spent the past couple of weeks studying Leeds United and explained after how Leeds only have two players who are good in the air, rovers.co.uk report.

“The benefits of the international break allows you to have two weeks looking at the opponent. We were tuned into Leeds United,” Mowbray explained.

“I’ve mainly dedicated set pieces to other staff over the years and I left it to Lowey (David Lowe) and Ben (Benson). Seeing as they only have two big headers of the ball, we took them both out of the equation which helped Danny and then Darragh to score.”

“Great credit to the players for recognising that. It’s good when it all comes off. Sometimes you don’t get the benefits of that hard work coming off, but we certainly did today.”

Blackburn dealt Leeds their first away defeat in the Championship this season, defeating Marcelo Bielsa’s side 2-1 with both of Rovers’ goals coming from set-pieces.

Danny Graham gave the hosts the lead inside two minutes, and Darragh Lenihan scored Rovers’ second header of the game in the second period, after Leeds’ Mateusz Klich had equalised for the visitors.

Mowbray spoke before the game how Leeds had the best physical stats in the league, with their running and intensity unmatched, as Argentine boss Bielsa works his side hard in training.

But the Whites don’t have a lot of height in a side featuring several technical players, whereas Blackburn are built to play a physical game, and they had a clear height advantage they used to perfection from set-pieces.

While Leeds are capable of taking teams apart this season, their opponents may now see they have a soft spot, and more sides may now work extra hard in training on dead-ball situations prior to facing the Yorkshire club.
