According to a report in the Northern Echo, Blackburn Rovers are keen to sign Sunderland’s Dylan McGeouch after coming close to signing the former Hibernian man 12 months ago.

Rovers were beaten to his signature by Sunderland last summer. However, he signed just a one-year deal with the Black Cats meaning he can walk away from the club for free this summer.

It is claimed in the report that several clubs are keen McGeouch. Scottish giants Rangers are cited as suitors while fellow Championship clubs Brentford and Queens Park Rangers are also said to be keen.

Sunderland will be desperate for the player to stay on despite McGeouch making just 14 league appearances this term after struggling with injury problems.

The Black Cats will have to look at lowering their expenditure after missing out on promotion to the Championship, and they could start at moving on some of the higher earners.

The Northern Echo claim McGeouch’s wages are more in line with League One standard, whereas Lee Cattermole on the other hand could be a casualty of the club’s recent playoff final defeat.

Blackburn had success signing Jack Rodwell from Sunderland on a free transfer deal last term, and they may feel McGeouch represents another potential opportunity despite a somewhat mediocre campaign.
