Derby County lost 2-1 at home to Fulham at the weekend.

Derby County fans have taken to social networking site Twitter in order to lavish praise on Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney following his excellent display in the Cottager’s 2-1 win at Pride Park.

It was fourth against fifth in the Championship on Saturday, and on a cold and blustery day it was the visitors who came on top as Slavisa Jokanovic’s men recorded their eighth win in ten games.

Fulham have been in excellent form over the past six weeks, and the January arrivals of loan duo Aleksandar Mitrovic and Matt Targett from Newcastle United and Southampton respectively have made such a difference.

Mitrovic opened the scoring for the West London side on Saturday, and Ryan Sessegnon added a second before half-time to put Fulham in total control as they eased to the three points despite Derby pulling one back.

The Newcastle forward and 17-year-old wonderkid Sessegnon have received plenty of plaudits over the past few weeks, but the standout player for the visitors was in fact central midfielder Tom Cairney.

The Scotland international showed exactly why he was linked with the Premier League during January – recording a whopping nine dribbles while chipping in with two tackles and two effective clearances (Whoscored).

According to a report in Sky Sports, West Ham United saw a £15 million bid for Cairney turned away and right now it seems Fulham made the right choice as they continue to climb up the table.

With just over ten games remaining, last season’s playoff semi-finalists have the bit between their teeth and automatic promotion is within sight despite Cardiff City’s decent form.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Derby fans felt Cairney was already at Premier League level as they raved about the midfielder, wishing they had a player of his calibre in their team right now.
