Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles in action
Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez says defender Jamaal Lascelles has responded in the right way after being dropped from the starting eleven in midweek, the Chronicle report.
The former Nottingham Forest defender was made the club’s new captain following Fabricio Coloccini’s exit this summer – a big call considering Lacelles’ evident young age and perhaps lack of experience.
Giving a player the armband often galvanises them, yet Lascelles’ performances during Newcastle’s opening two matches were somewhat unconvincing with the Mapgies suffering two defeats.

He was subsequently dropped from the eleven during Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Reading, yet Benitez has been impressed with his reaction and sees it a sign of his responsibility.
“He reacted really well. That is the reason why I gave him the armband because he’s somebody who knows his responsibilities to work hard in every game and lead by example,” Benitez told the Chronicle.
“He’s fine but will he play? You’ll see tomorrow.”

With new signing Grant Hanley and talente defender Chancel Mbemba also vying for first-team spots, Lascelles has competition for a regular spot and no guarantees can be made.
Newcastle will look to build on their convincing win over the Royals when they take on an improving Bristol City side under the guidance of Lee Johnson at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
The Magpies are the Championship favourites for promotion, though supporters may have to show some patience as Benitez and his men adapt to what is a very competitive league.
