Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Theo Walcott’s ability to go in behind the opposition defence allows his side to have a better balance and more attacking options, he told the club’s official website.
Many have questioned why Walcott consistently features for the Gunners, and the England national team, when his goal scoring record is not great among many other flaws in his game.
But time and again he manages to prove the doubters wrong by coming up trumps with a well-worked goal, and against Hull City he finished off the game’s best move to put the result beyond the Tigers.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Wenger insists Walcott has unique qualities and believes his ability to run in behind where others come short for the ball gives the Gunners a different attacking dimension.
“He has interesting qualities for us. He goes behind, many players like to come to the ball and he’s one of the players who is very dangerous for the quality of his runs and his receptions,” Wenger explained.
“We need players who go behind the defenders and he can do that well. When Sanchez plays up front, he likes to come to the ball. To have someone who goes behind at the same moment.”
Walcott is often used in a number of positions in the final third, yet the player himself believes he is more effective down the middle and when on form there are few who could argue with that.
The 27-year-old has made a decent start to the current Premier League campaign, scoring two goals and grabbing an assist in five outings while averaging 3.2 shots per match.
