Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen has been linked with Barcelona.
According to the latest reports in Spanish editorial ABC, number one Barcelona target Antoine Griezmann has opted to stay at fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid for another season – potential bad news for Tottenham Hotspur.
The France international has a well-documented £90 million release clause which means he is a viable option in today’s financial climate, and it was expected that he would move to the Nou Camp this term.
But the latest reports from Spain claim that is no longer the case, and as a result it could spell terrible news for Spurs as playmaker Christian Eriksen is another player high on Barca’s wish-list.
A recent report in Diario Sport claimed the Denmark international was the Catalan club’s alternative number one option, should they fail in their bid to lure Griezmann away from the Spanish capital Madrid.
Tottenham could command a huge fee for the former Ajax man, as his latest campaign saw him join a unique set of players across Europe’s big five leagues by hitting double figures in both goals and assists.
Eriksen would be a superb addition for Barcelona, and the La Liga champions will know that Spurs have a history of selling their better players with Gareth Bale and Luka Modric both joining eternal rivals Real Madrid.
But Spurs have progressed further since those days, and they’re now in a situation where financially they don’t have to sell, and they are in a position to offer regular Champions League football having finished in the top three of the Premier League for three straight seasons.
The lack of silverware and Spurs’ tight wage structure, with no player earning more than £100,000 per week (Spotrac), however, are potential issues and the lure of Barcelona would be always hard to turn down.
