Derby County attacker Andreas Weimann says he and his teammates didn’t know what to do when Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ruben Neves scored the goal of the season on Wednesday, dcfc.co.uk report.

The Rams were looking to consolidate their place in the playoffs on Wednesday, but they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at league leaders Wolves with Diogo Jota and Neves grabbing the goals for the champions-elect.

Neves, in Weimann’s eyes, the best player in the Championship, scored a goal befitting of the very highest level as he flicked up the ball and struck the sweetest of volleys which found the top corner from all of 30 yards.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Derby attacker admitted immediately after the goal that he and his teammates were stunned, while the Rams’ travelling support could only acknowledge the genius.

“I think he’s probably the best player in the league. On the goal, live it’s probably the best one I’ve seen on the pitch, unfortunately it has come against us,” Weimann explained.

“Even our fans clapped, there is nothing you can do about that. We all just looked at each other on the pitch, we didn’t really know what to do because it was that much of a good strike. An amazing goal.”

Weimann spent the last few months of last season on loan at Wolves, but he has since come back to Pride Park and worked himself in to the first-team picture whereas Wanderers have undergone substantial changes.

The West Midlands club, with the help of influential super-agent Jorge Mendes, have acquired players such as Jota and Neves which are ultimately far too good for the Championship.

It’s little surprise to see Wolves sitting 11 points clear at the top of the table, and within one victory of promotion to the Premier League as they look to seal the deal with victory over rivals Birmingham City this weekend.

As for Neves, the Portugal international will be right at home in the top-flight and having already featured in the Champions League, he is surely destined to reach that level again within the coming years.
