Amiens club president Bernard Joannin has told French reporters how his side are in strong talks with Stoke City over the possibility of signing Erik Pieters on a permanent deal this summer, Courrier Picard report.

“We are talking hard with Stoke City for Erik Pieters,” Joannin briefly claimed.

Pieters signed for Stoke City in a reported £3 million deal back in 2013.

The 30-year-old left-back went on to make more than 160 Premier League appearances for the Potters. However, their relegation to the Championship 13 months ago has placed his future into doubt.

Despite playing in over 20 Championship games last term, Nathan Jones’s arrival as manager prompted Pieters to leave the club in the January transfer window as he joined French side Amiens on loan.

Former Luton Town boss Jones is keen to make changes at Stoke. He wants his side to play fast attacking football, utilising energetic fullbacks who like to get forward.

Pieters was a solid player under Mark Hughes and later Gary Rowett, but the change in philosophy at the Bet365 Stadium means he will now focus on finding a new club.

The 18-capped Holland international made an impact at Amiens last term as he helped the French club retain their top-flight status, but it remains to be seen whether they can afford to sign him permanently.
