Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park in the early game Saturday.
Former Toon player Alan Shearer Tweeted that Newcastle United suffered a disappointing result at home to Tottenham Hotspur as they deserved at least a point from their opening day 2-1 defeat.
For large spells the Magpies more than matched the visitors, but goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli either side of a Joselu equaliser in the opening stages of the game handed Spurs all three points.
Tweeting immediately after the game, Shearer highlighted there were plenty of positives for Newcastle to take from the encounter.
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has had to endure a tough summer on Tyneside, with a lack of investment relative to the club’s Premier League rivals making for a likely testing campaign.
The Spanish boss named a starting XI which didn’t include any of the club’s seven new signings. Salomon Rondon was arguably Newcastle’s most recognisable addition, yet the Venezuelan started the game on the bench and wasn’t introduced until the final quarter of the game.
The former West Bromwich Albion man almost rescued a point for his side, but unfortunately for him his deflected effort five minutes from time cannoned back off the woodwork with Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris beaten.
Despite losing to Spurs, the hosts gave a good account of themselves and they can take plenty of positives after pushing one of the Premier League’s better teams all the way.
