Blackburn Rovers ace Ryan Nyambe has yet to start a league game this year.
Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray says he dropped defender Ryan Nyambe to take him out of the firing line following two poor home performances over the festive period, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.
“Ryan Nyambe was powerful and solid. He’s been in the team for most of my two years but had two bad games back-to-back against Norwich and Birmingham City at home two months ago and I felt he had to be taken out of the firing line,” Mowbray explained.
“Ryan Nyambe is a player we like, he’s quick, he’s powerful and strong.”
Nyambe was deemed a regular first-teamer at the start of the season. He started 17 of Blackburn’s first 24 games of the season, with his only absence from the side coming as a result of an injury sustained in late September.
But following the 3-2 defeat at Leeds United on Boxing Day, Nyambe has managed just 122 minutes of Championship action with Elliott Bennett preferred at right-back.
Nyambe, 21, stands at 6ft and is quick a long the ground and powerful in the air. His versatility means Mowbray has the option to play him in the middle, with the youngster replacing central defender Jack Rodwell in the recent 1-0 defeat at home to Middlesbrough.
Many Blackburn supporters may have been wondering why the Rovers academy graduate hadn’t featured much of late, but it seems Mowbray was hoping to protect him following the side’s winless run in December.
Following four straight league defeats and some injuries at the back, however, Nyambe may now be given another chance to establish himself as a regular in Rovers’ defence ahead of his contract expiration this summer.
