Afriyie Acquah eyes future Arsenal move, but is he good enough?

Arsenal have an admirer in Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah.

Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah has told reporters for Ghanaweb that he has a fondness for Premier League side Arsenal and envisions one day playing for the north London club.

Acquah is currently enjoying a quiet summer after Ghana uncharacteristically missed out on a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to England before, with the player admitting that he was seemingly close to joining Birmingham City in January which would have been real coup for the Blues.

But speaking to reporters this summer, the powerful midfielder says he dreams of playing in the English top flight and highlighted Arsenal as his ideal club with the north Londoners renowned for having previously signed African stars.

“In January, I was moving to Birmingham but later there were a lot of issues, so I couldn’t move,” Acquah told Ghanaweb.

“My dream is to play in England, so always I pray that one day, I get a chance to play there. I don’t have a favourite team I want to play for, but any club, even if it’s Chelsea or Arsenal.”

“The team I like is Arsenal, so imagine me playing for them.”

Acquah started his professional career at Palermo before moving on to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim and then later returning to Italy with Torino, where he has since become a regular in the first-team squad.

The defensive midfielder made 22 Serie A appearances last term, but he spent most of the campaign on the fringes of the first-team as he struggled to nail down a regular starting spot.

Arsenal are certainly in need of strengthening their midfield this summer and newly-appointed boss Unai Emery would be wise to add both strength and mobility in that area.

Acquah, however, is not good enough at this moment in time to be playing for a club with Champions League aspirations; therefore he should perhaps curb his own ambitions somewhat or target a switch to a Championship side first to see how he adapts to life in England.
