AC Milan host Arsenal in the Europa League last 16 knockout phase on Thursday, and reports from Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb state that over 67,000 home tickets have already been sold.
The Gunners head in to their clash with the Italian side on their worst run of form for over 15 years, losing four straight games in all competitions including a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup final.
Arsenal’s form has caused quite a stir at the club, with more and more supporters joining the ‘Wenger Out’ brigade, while a number of first-team players have been put in the firing line.
But regardless of their poor form in the Premier League, the number of tickets sold by Milan for their upcoming clash suggests that the North London side are still considered a European heavyweight.
The Gunners used to be a regular in the Champions League knockout stages, reaching the final in 2006 where they lost out to Barcelona and making the semi-finals two years later.
This season has seen them fall from grace somewhat, but AC Milan supporters still recognise them as a team to watch as over 67,000 home tickets have been sold already ahead of Thursday’s encounter.
That figure triumphs the Rossoneri’s average attendance in the league which stands at just under 51,000, as per Transfermarkt, and it could end up reaching near the San Siro’s maximum attendance of 80,018.
Considering Serie A boasts a number of high-profile clubs such as Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Lazio, Fiorentina and of course city rivals Inter Milan, it is impressive how many fans are willing to turn out to see Arsenal in action.
Arsene Wenger’s men are now surely too far behind the Premier League’s top four to qualify for the Champions League that way, therefore their next best option is to go all the way in the Europa League.
