Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Zaidu Sanusi in a joint-deal with Luis Diaz.

Spurs were credited with a strong interest in Diaz this week, and they were reportedly deep into negotiations with Porto about the player.

However, initially, Spurs went to Porto pitching a double deal that would have seen Diaz and Sanusi join the north London outfit.

What’s been said about Sanusi?

Castles shared what he knows about this pitched double deal.

“Also, Tottenham initially were trying to do a deal that paired Luis Diaz with Zaidu Sanusi, the Nigerian left-back at Porto, so they were trying to do a joint-deal in the first place, but they eventually backed out of the Zaidoo element of that deal,” Castles said.

Not needed

As talented as Sanusi is, it’s fair to say that Tottenham don’t really need to bolster their left-back position this month.

Sergio Reguilon is an incredibly talented player, who has shown he’s capable of playing at wing-back, and while things haven’t quite gone to plan for Ryan Sessegnon yet, Spurs shouldn’t write him off just yet.

Sanusi would have been a nice addition to the squad, there’s no doubt about that. But Spurs don’t have too much space for more non-homegrown players, and with the midfield, attack and right-wing-back positions needing work, Sanusi would be too much of a luxury at this point in time.
