Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after watching footage of Joel Matip bossing Takumi Minamino during pre-season training.
What’s the story?
Well, interestingly, some Liverpool fans think Matip could play as a midfielder after watching the 13-second video.
It shows Liverpool’s No.32 seizing upon a loose ball, before shrugging Minamino aside and charging away.
Matip shows some nice footwork to protect the ball, before laying it off to Sadio Mane.
The footage pretty much showcased what the 29-year-old is all about.
Matip is strong in the tackle, but is also brave enough to use the ball wisely and dribble with it as well.
Could Joel Matip play in midfield?
If need be, we feel the Cameroonian could easily play in midfield.
While at Schalke 04, Matip played in midfield 49 times, so he’s no stranger to that area of the field.
He hasn’t, however, played in midfield for the Reds.
One Liverpool fan below said he could be Gini Wijnaldum’s replacement.
Another suggested Jürgen Klopp tries the switch, which another supporter said they’d been recommending for years.
In our view, while Matip could play there, he doesn’t have to.
Klopp already has Thiago, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, as well as Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to offer depth.
