Robin Gosens has been speaking to Sky Germany about his January move to Inter Milan, and he made an interesting claim involving Newcastle.
What’s the story?
Well, Gosens admitted that Newcastle were keen to sign him in January, and negotiations with the Magpies went “far”.
However, it was Inter Milan who eventually won the race, as the Serie A side sealed a deal worth €25m (£21m).
Speaking to Sky Germany, Gosens said: “That’s true. That was real, and the negotiations went as far as was described, just without the fact that I said yes. And then came Inter, who then wanted to finish everything relatively quickly. Accordingly, the transfer took place in 48 hours.”
Had Newcastle pulled this deal off, it would’ve been one of the best signings of the January transfer window – if not the best.
Gosens is arguably one of the most exciting left-backs in Europe, and has proven to be a consistently excellent performer for both Atalanta and Germany.
Now, the 27-year-old has a big opportunity to shine for Inter Milan.
Newcastle shouldn’t worry about Robin Gosens

As aforesaid, this would’ve been a great signing for Newcastle, although there’s no need to worry about missing out, thanks to Matt Targett.
The Magpies sealed a short-term loan deal for the Aston Villa left-back on deadline day, and in his one outing so far, he proved to be a reliable presence at the back.
Targett played 90 minutes as Newcastle beat Everton by three goals to one on Tuesday, and he was fantastic.
As WhoScored shows, the 26-year-old made two interceptions and three clearances, while also recording one key pass and one successful dribble.

After all, Targett was named Players’ Player of the Season at Aston Villa last term, so his ability shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
Gosens is, of course, the more glamorous option, but who knows if the German would’ve struggled to adapt to the Premier League.
In Targett, Eddie Howe has someone he can truly depend on.
