Tottenham Hotspur youngster Troy Parrott has been called up into the Republic of Ireland’s under 21 squad.
This is Parrott’s first call at this level, and he is on stand by for the senior squad, the Irish Times report.
It is a big boost for Parrott, and for Tottenham too. The young striker is a little caught in limbo at Spurs right now after an excellent pre-season.
Parrott has not made Tottenham’s bench yet in the Premier League, across the team’s opening three matches.
At just 17, he caught the eye, and has been around the matchday squad, he just has not made the next step, yet.
Parrott has only played an hour of under-23 football this season. He scored twice, in a 3-1 victory over Manchester City on August 16.
That is great, but 61 minutes of action to start the season is not quite what Parrott needs. Spurs must find a way to get him involved more, at both levels.
That’s why the call up for Ireland is a positive for Tottenham and Parrott, as it provides another test for the promising young striker.
Parrott is doing astounding well just to be in the conversation for places with Ireland and Tottenham right now.
Any game time he can get will help him out.
Tottenham are still lacking options up front, with Harry Kane a clear cut first choice.
When Parrott can establish himself enough and win over Mauricio Pochettino to the point that he should be on the bench each week, Tottenham will be stronger for it.
There is potentially an opening at Spurs right now for Parrott, and the international games can give him a leg up to help him seize it.
