Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to make a claim about Newcastle and Kieran Trippier during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Rangers in the Champions League.

Alan Shearer defends Newcastle star Kieran Trippier

Last night, Trent Alexander-Arnold silenced those who are currently doubting him with a superb freekick in the 7th minute against Rangers.

As you may have heard, the 23-year-old has been under the spotlight in recent weeks as Gareth Southgate refuses to use him at international level.

After the freekick, Henry Winter – Chief Football Writer for The Times – pointed out that Southgate would be foolish to leave such quality out of his World Cup squad, before Shearer hit back with a very valid point.

The 52-year-old wrote: “But Trippier can do that also Henry!”

For all the fanfare surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s excellent freekick, there is no denying that Trippier is certainly capable of similar brilliance.

That was evident when the £12m man curled in a beautiful freekick in the 3-3 draw against Manchester City at St James’ Park earlier this season, while he also did it against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final.

Newcastle have underrated gem in Kieran Trippier

For all the criticism aimed towards Alexander-Arnold for his defensive qualities, we never hear anything like that about Trippier, which is testament to the 32-year-old.

Not only is he a fine technician and a dead-ball specialist, but he is also a very solid defender both on the left and right of the backline, or even when being used as a wing-back.

Somehow, the Magpies managed to sign Trippier for just £12m from Atlético Madrid, and that simply has to go down as some of the best business done on Tyneside for many years.

Hopefully, the England international can avoid injuries before the World Cup begins in November, and can use his qualities to help the Three Lions succeed in Qatar.
