Tottenham Hotspur have taken a risk with their slow transfer business so far in the window, especially considering key World Cup stars return to the club late.

One positive was that a core of talent did go to Russia, and they had a chance to really stake their claims and kick on.

Yet three of them, Harry Winks, Victor Wanyama and Juan Foyth are all battling injuries.

Foyth has already been ruled out of the season opener against Newcastle, a game in which he could have stood a chance of featuring in if he impressed in pre-season especially with question marks over Toby Alderweireld’s future.

Harry Winks did not travel on Tottenham’s tour to the US, while Victor Wanyama’s knee injury has flamed up again.

Spurs hope he will be fit to return quickly, but at this stage fans have learned to fear the worst.

The injuries begin to highlight what a gamble it has been not to sign any players this summer.

Even if Spurs do late business now, there is no guarantee any new additions will be ready to slot straight in for the start of the season either.

It is bad luck, but Winks’ injury issues are no surprise, and Spurs also got a warning with Wanyama last season.

The club cannot afford any more misfortune ahead of the season opener against Newcastle.
