Speaking on the What the Footie Podcast, transfer chief David Webb has been chatting about Emile Smith Rowe and his attempts to sign the Arsenal youngster at Tottenham.
Webb has a plethora of experience working in football. He’s currently the Head of Football Operations at Huddersfield Town, while he’s previously worked for the likes of Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Tottenham.
One player that Webb has tracked for a long time is Emile Smith Rowe, and he claims that he tried to get him to Tottenham when he was just a teenager.
What’s been said?
Webb shared a story about Smith Rowe.
“A good example is Emile Smith Rowe, we got him on loan when we were at Huddersfield from Arsenal. He was a player I knew all about from when he was quite young. We tried to take him at Tottenham when he was 16 or 17. We followed his path when he went to RB Leipzig, and when you look at a talent like that he was coming into a completely different environment, it was a needs must at the time as Huddersfield needed a player in that sort of position,” Webb said.

Another Kane
Smith Rowe really could have been another Harry Kane if he’d left Arsenal at a young age for Spurs.
Luckily for the Gunners, that particular move never came to fruition and now he’s one of Mikel Arteta’s most important players for Spurs’ biggest rivals.
Would Smith Rowe have become the player he is today if he’d signed for Spurs? Who knows? Arsenal were in a rare position last season where they were able to give him a chance, and the midfielder hasn’t looked back since.
Would that same opportunity have come up at Tottenham? Sadly for Spurs, we’ll never know.
