Former Everton winger Trevor Steven has told The Scottish Sun a problem Rangers face in competing with Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Rangers are playing in the Scottish Premiership this season after winning automatic promotion from the Scottish Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Gers are unlikely to win the league title this season and will have to aim for the second place in the table.

Former Rangers winger Steven has highlighted a major problem Mark Warburton’s face in competing with Celtic.

The former England international, who is 53 years of age, believes that the Gers have problem in attracting top players because they cannot compete with the Bhoys financially.

“Rangers are going to have to sell the family silver to catch Celtic,” Steven told The Scottish Sun.

“It’s perhaps premature to think about, because Celtic have to win another four in a row, but in the back of their minds the fans are already thinking about it.

“Once Celtic get to six, all of a sudden there’s real pressure on Rangers and they’ve got to stop them within two years, because if they get to seven it is going to be bedlam.

“The problem Rangers have though is attracting the right people. Rangers’ buying power is a third of Celtic’s and that gap has to narrow, but while that gap is narrowing Celtic are picking up trophies.”

Rangers are third in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 20 points from 12 matches.

The Glasgow giants are as many as 14 points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The Gers will return to action this afternoon when they take on Dundee at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers should be able to win the match against Dundee, although it is not going to easy for the home team.
