Trevor Sinclair told talkSPORT that he was ‘surprised’ that Everton ‘let go’ Theo Walcott in the summer.

Two years after signing for Everton from Arsenal for £20 million [Telegraph], Walcott found himself returning to the club where it all started during the summer transfer window.

Walcott is currently on-loan at Southampton this season and he will be hoping to guide them to Europe at the end of the campaign.

But former England winger Sinclair shared that he liked the look of Walcott at Everton and suggested that they shouldn’t have let him leave.

“I think they [Southampton] have strengthened as well bringing in Theo,” said Sinclair. “He was a breath of fresh air.

“For me, I was surprised that Everton let him go because I have been to Everton and Goodison a few times where Theo has looked really on it and looks like he is happy and enjoying his football.

“Definitely over any kind of injuries, so yes he was a real threat.”

It was the right call from Everton, Southampton and Walcott himself to make that return to St Mary’s because he is playing some top-class football.

Whilst the Saints suffered a defeat against Leicester on Saturday, they have been one of the standout teams this season and Walcott has played his part.

Given that Walcott is supposed to return to Merseyside in the summer, it will be interesting to see if he seals a permanent switch to Southampton for the next campaign.
