Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is reportedly wanted by Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and is a key player for Southampton.
Signed from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £13 million, Van Dijk has established himself as a top-quality centre-back in the English top flight over the past two seasons.
Given that Southampton have sold some of their best players in recent years, such as Victor Wanyama and Adam Lallana, it is only logical to expect that the Netherlands international will leave St. Mary’s Stadium sooner rather than later.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old centre-back in the summer transfer window. According to The Sun, the Dutchman is Reds manager Jurgen Klopp’s top target, and that the former Groningen star is considering handing in a transfer request at Southampton.
Former Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United winger Trevor Sinclair seems to be a fan of Van Dijk, and believes that the Dutchman would be a good signing for Liverpool.
The 44-year-old former Manchester City winger, though, has shared his concern about the Dutchman’s injury – the defender did not play after January due to an ankle injury.
“His injury is the only concern,” Sinclair told BBC Sport’s Facebook live (July 14, 2017) about Van Dijk. “Is he going to come back from that injury the same player?
“We will have to wait and see, but Liverpool, if they do get that player, that would make a massive difference to their team.”
