Trevor Sinclair suggested on talkSPORT (9:28am, January 29, 2021) that he does not think that Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard would be a good signing for West Ham United.
According to Sky Sports, Lingard will join West Ham on loan from Premier League rivals United before the January transfer window closes next week.
The 28-year-old, who can also operate as a winger, will reportedly stay on loan at the Hammers until the end of the season.
Former West Ham winger Sinclair has questioned the reasoning behind Lingard reportedly agreeing to make a move to the Hammers.
Sinclair said about Lingard on talkSPORT (9:28am, January 29, 2021): “Listen, he is a big name, and he has scored some big goals for Manchester United, excellent for England as well. He has not played this season, he played limited last season. I think he scored one goal last season. I am looking at the strength and depth that West Ham have got in that midfield.”
The talkSPORT pundit added: “Is he good enough to get into that midfield three? Is he good enough to replace Antonio when Antonio needs a rest or gets injured at number 9? I don’t see it. I am not sure. Why would he go to be a squad player at West Ham when he is a squad player (at United)? For me, this comes across like a bit of a Manuel Pellegrini (signing).”
Does Trevor Sinclair have a point?
Lingard has played just twice in the EFL Cup and once in the FA Cup for United so far this season, according to WhoScored.
During the 2019-20 campaign, the Englishman made nine starts and 13 substitute appearances in the Premier League and made four starts and five substitute appearances in the Europa League for the Red Devils, according to WhoScored.
Lingard is unlikely to get any playing time for United this season, while a move to West Ham could see him at least stand a chance.
After all, West Ham manager David Moyes knows the 28-year-old from his time at United.
