Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has been linked with a move from Swansea City to Everton in the summer transfer window.

Former Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United winger Trevor Sinclair revealed on BBC Sport’s Facebook live (July 14, 2017) that Tottenham Hotspur did not want to let reported Everton target Gylfi Sigurdsson leave for Swansea City back in 2014.

Sigurdsson left North London club Tottenham for Welsh outfit Swansea in the summer of 2014 after struggling to cement his place in the Spurs starting lineup during the previous two years at White Hart Lane.

The 27-year-old has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and has been linked with moves away from the Liberty Stadium.

According to The Mirror, Everton and Leicester City are interested in signing Sigurdsson in the summer transfer window, with the Swans demanding as much as £50 million for him.

Back in May, The Daily Mail claimed that Tottenham were considering making a move to re-sign the Iceland international midfielder from Swansea, who narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship at the end of last season.

Former Manchester City winger Sinclair has given his take on speculation linking Sigurdsson with a move to Everton in the summer transfer window.

The BBC pundit has suggested that although he would be a good signing, given his age, he would cost too much if the Toffees paid £50m for him.

Sinclair has also revealed that Tottenham did not want to part company with Sigurdsson in 2014.

“I do like him as a player and I like the transfer to Everton because I think Everton are obviously having a go,” said Sinclair on BBC Sport’s Facebook live (July 14, 2017) about Sigurdsson.

“They have got Rooney in there. It’s just his age. He is 27, 28. It’s a lot of money to spend for a player, but he is brilliant. I remember speaking to one of the board members at Spurs about Gylf when he was at Spurs, and they really didn’t want to let him go.”

“They didn’t want to let him go because he is a great pro,” added Sinclair regarding Sigurdsson’s exit from Tottenham in 2014.

“He just couldn’t get himself in the first team, and that’s why in the end, I think they felt not sorry for him, but they felt ‘this boy needs to be playing football’ and they let him go back to Swansea.”
