Trevor Sinclair suggested on talkSPORT (9:21am, February 12, 2021) that Arsenal should not have sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa in the summer of 2020.
The former West Ham United winger, who now works as a pundit for talkSPORT, has been impressed by the performances of Martinez for Villa so far this season.
Sinclair believes that although Bernd Leno is a good goalkeeper, Arsenal made a mistake in letting Martinez leave.
As reported by The Guardian in September 2020, Villa paid Arsenal £20 million to sign the 28-year-old goalkeeper.
Sinclair said about Martinez on talkSPORT (9:21am, February 12, 2021): “The performances last season even for Arsenal, I thought are Arsenal getting rid of the wrong goalkeeper here? As good as Leno is, Martinez has been outstanding for Villa this season.”
Arsenal exit had to happen
Leno is the first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal, and given how Martinez played for the Gunners in the final weeks of last season when the German was injured, it was clear that the Argentine was not going to be happy sitting on the substitutes’ bench.
At Villa, the 28-year-old has established himself as a regular in the first team and has proved to be a safe pair of hands.
Having been at Arsenal for 10 years and not being able to play regularly, Martinez had to leave the Gunners at some point.
