Scottie Scheffler’s run at the US Open looked shaky early, but once again, the world number one rallied and even briefly had a shot on Sunday.
Scheffler was four over par after 36 holes at Oakmont, flirting with the cut in a way we haven’t seen at a major since the 2022 PGA Championship. For most players, that would’ve ended any real hopes of contending, but this wasn’t most players.
By the time the weekend wrapped, Scheffler hadn’t broken par once, but he still climbed into a tie for seventh place, turning what could have been a lost week into another top-10 finish.
“That’s quite special”, says Trevor Immelman about Scottie Scheffler

Appearing on Fried Egg Golf, Trevor Immelman summed up just how rare it is for someone to be in the mix at a major without anything close to his best game.
“The amazing thing about Scheffler is he’s so good that he can have his D game and still have a chance to win with nine holes to play,” Immelman said. “That’s quite special. That’s quite something.”
“He made nothing on Sunday, and still with a few holes to go when everyone else started to leak oil, you were like, golly, is he going to be able to get in there at two over and have a chance to win this before J.J. made those great birdies to finish?”
“But yeah, he’s good. That’s obviously not groundbreaking analysis right there, but to be able to come to a test as tough as this and clearly not have his best stuff and still have a shot at it is quite something.”
Scheffler’s US Open form still a head-scratcher, but he keeps showing up
Despite his reputation for thriving in tough conditions – with wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Memorial, and even Olympic gold – Scheffler hasn’t posted a round in the 60s at the US Open since LACC in 2023. That stretch has now reached nine straight rounds.
Even so, finishing inside the top 10 at Oakmont, on a week when Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut and Rory McIlroy nearly joined him, is another sign of why Scheffler remains golf’s most reliable force.
Even when he’s off, he still finds a way to hang around. And that might be the most worrying part for everyone else.
