Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers had the legendary attacker for a year in the 1980s.

Trevor Francis has admitted to The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers fans embarrass him by holding him in such high esteem.

The legendary attacker joined Rangers for a year until 1988, but didn’t manage any league goals in 18 outings for the Ibrox outfit.

Nevertheless, Francis, a League Cup winner with the Gers 31 years ago, admits that it doesn’t sit well with him how popular he remains among the light Blues’ fanbase and says that he could have been so much better during his stint in Glasgow.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “I feel a little bit embarrassed that I’m held in such high esteem by Rangers fans.

“Whenever I meet them they’re always so decent with me. And I keep thinking to myself, ‘well, I didn’t do much there’. I could have contributed so much more.”

The 64-year-old was in his early 30s at the time of joining Rangers and his best days were behind him.

Rangers – then under Graeme Souness – were beaten to the Scottish Premier League title by Celtic during Francis’s only year in Glasgow, and Steven Gerrard’s side will experience the same this season.

Gerrard, in his first year as Bears boss, has been unable to bridge the gap to Celtic’s quality, and Francis reckons that a lot more work is needed to compete with the Hoops, who are on course for a third successive treble.

“That’s an unbelievable first job for Gerrard to have in management. And he’s doing pretty well so far. I think a lot of it will depend on how much financial backing he receives.

“He’s got them up to second place but there’s still a considerable way to go before they can close in on Celtic.”
