Celtic’s January target Trevor Carson came back to haunt the Hoops in their latest Scottish Premiership clash.

When Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers saw the opposition lineup for their clash with Motherwell on Sunday, he would have undoubtedly been hoping that one Well player had the kind of off-day that would have left the Hoops fans scratching their heads as to why they had been linked with a January move for the player.

BBC Sport reported on transfer deadline day during the last window that Celtic were keen on signing Motherwell goalkeeper Trevor Carson and had been willing to pay £375,000 for the stopper as they looked to add more depth between the sticks with Craig Gordon injured.

However, Carson would stay put and Celtic would ultimately end up signing Scott Bain on loan from Dundee.

Bain has vindicated the club’s decision to sign him. He was initially backup for Dorus De Vries, but he got the chance to make his debut in last weekend’s Old Firm game and made a huge impression as the visitors picked up a brilliant win.

And in fairness to Bain, he did absolutely nothing wrong during Celtic’s trip to Fir Park on Sunday – but he was completely overshadowed by his opposite number as Celtic missed out on the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 12 points.

Carson made a string of fine saves to keep Celtic at bay as the game finished goalless. And while Rodgers will not have been disappointed with the business that he did do in January with bringing Bain in, he would have been forgiven for being left with a wry smile after seeing his other January target’s display.

And after the game, a handful of Celtic fans were also full of praise for the goalkeeper’s performance in the stalemate…
