A new goalkeeper at Ibrox could be one of Rangers’ highest summer priorities.
Rangers’ tumultuous season has finally seen Graeme Murty leave Ibrox on Tuesday after six months in the job, with the state of the club in complete disarray. Whoever replaces Murty has a huge job on their hands.
The strong favourite remains to be Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, though nothing is concrete as of yet with three Scottish Premiership fixtures still to play.
But whoever does indeed take to the hotseat at Ibrox must begin identifying positions to improve ahead of the summer transfer window, and one of the club’s highest transfer priorities should be in goal.
Wes Foderingham has been linked with a move back down south, with Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday said to be keen after the Scottish Sun claimed he would leave Ibrox.
Without the 27-year-old stopper, Rangers are left with only Jak Alwnick who could do nothing but concede five goals to Old Firm rivals Celtic on Sunday. He has made just eight appearances in a year and a half at Ibrox.
Allan McGregor is reportedly close to a move though he is 36 years of age. Rangers need a goalkeeper to rival McGregor, who will certainly not be the same standard that he was before he left Ibrox in 2012.
Step forward Motherwell stopper Trevor Carson, who was the subject of multiple bids from Celtic in the summer – only for The Well to turn down a £375,000 offer according to Sky Sports.
But Carson has starred since his move to Fir Park, keeping a huge 17 clean sheets in 44 league and cup outings for Stephen Robinson’s side.
Luring the one-time Northern Ireland international to Ibrox would be a major coup for Rangers, giving them a one of the best goalkeepers currently plying their trade in the Scottish Premiership – certainly he would be an improvement on Foderingham.
