West Ham face Stoke City on Monday night in the Premier League.
West Ham United legend Sir Trevor Brooking has told Sky Sports that he believes a win against Stoke City will ensure the Hammers’ Premier League status for another season.
The Hammers play host to Paul Lambert’s Stoke City on Monday evening at the London Stadium, in what is a crucial encounter in the bottom third of the table.
David Moyes’ side currently sit six points clear of the drop zone in 15th place, and will have been mightily relieved that bitter rivals Chelsea came from two goals down to beat 18th-placed Southampton 3-2 with three strikes in nine minutes.
Brooking, who remained in the directors box during the protests as West Ham lost 3-0 to Burnley last month, reckons 37 points will be enough to stay up – something the Hammers can achieve with a win over the Potters.
“I think a win on Monday would almost be enough,” Brooking said. “I think 37 points would be enough. I think three points will mean the last month of the season will be more relaxed than it was the previous one.
“It wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have the rollercoaster of being a West Ham fan. You don’t know what’s around the corner. That’s part of the attraction to a certain extent.”
Moyes will be without a number of his first-team stars as the Hammers suffer from another injury crisis towards the end of the season, something that crippled Slaven Bilic’s spell in east London.
Pedro Obiang, Michail Antonio, Sam Byram and Winston Reid will all miss the match, while quartet Andy Carroll, Manuel Lanzini, James Collins and Aaron Cresswell are doubts to face Stoke.
