The West Ham icon came close to joining Chelsea and Tottenham, he says.
Sir Trevor Brooking says he was going to join Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur in 1965 but, of course, ended up joining West Ham United, according to the club’s official website.
Brooking is now a West Ham legend but could well have ended up at another London club.
He says he was convinced by Ron Greenwood, while the fact he was an Irons fan also played a big part in his decision not to go to west London.
Brooking told the West Ham site: “The weird thing was that I was going to join a club in ’65, but it wasn’t going to be West Ham, it was going to be Chelsea or Spurs.
“Of course, once the team you support surfaced and I liked Ron [Greenwood], I decided instead of joining Chelsea, who had a good youth structure under Tommy Docherty, I’d join West Ham on a two-year apprenticeship.”
Brooking is no doubt proud of the Hammers’ success this season.
Spurs, too, are going extremely strong, while Chelsea have endured a campaign to forget.
That said, the Blues face the easiest fixture on paper this weekend, traveling to Swansea City. West Ham, meanwhile, host Arsenal, while Tottenham face Manchester United at White Hart Lane.
