Trent Alexander-Arnold has hailed Rhys Williams after his performance against Midtjylland in the Champions League on Liverpool’s official website.

Williams was forced into action after Fabinho picked up an injury in the first-half of Liverpool’s midweek game.

While many 19-year-olds may have been overawed by the occasion, Williams seemed to thrive on the big stage, as he helped his side to a 2-0 victory.

Alexander-Arnold now believes his young teammate’s ‘world-class’ display could earn him a start for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the weekend, when the Reds take on West Ham United.

“You’ve seen Rhys Williams stepping in and doing a world-class job,” he said

“At such a young age with such little experience, unbelievable from him. He never really put a foot wrong. Well done to him and I think he’s got a bright future ahead.

“I think he’s an amazing player, he’s shown that over the last few weeks. He wasn’t with us much last season but he came in this season and showed how good a player he is.

“The manager obviously trusts him a lot and he’s been playing a few minutes. To be thrown in at the deep end on the biggest of stages is tough to do, tough to perform, but he never really put a foot wrong. So I think he’ll definitely be in the manager’s thoughts hopefully come the weekend and further on.”

With Liverpool suffering so badly with injury, Williams could be in line to receive his big chance.

Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho are all sidelined currently, meaning Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s only available senior centre-back.

Klopp has already hinted that one of his side’s youngsters could get a chance in the coming weeks, with Williams and Nathaniel Phillips both name-checked in a recent interview.
