He only signed for Chelsea last August from Liverpool, and it would become the second time Andre Villas-Boas has signed the player in as many season. AVB appeared to rule out signing Yann M’Vila, describing him as ‘talented but too defensive’ and admitting to liking Joao Moutinho but resigning himself to the fact that Porto will not sell.

Arsenal are keen on signing Anderlecht schemer Lucas Biglia. The Argentine midfielder is 25 and rated highly, and Arsene Wenger is ready to move if Alex Song moves on to Barcelona.

Sky Sports also report that Manchester City are ready to respond to Manchester United‘s acquisition of Robin van Persie by doing what their rivals have not been able to do this summer, signing a top class midfielder. It is claimed that the agent of Roma lynchpin Daniele de Rossi is flying into England for talks with the club, a fortnight after Roma told City he would be available, but only if a ‘mega offer’ came in. Over to you City.

The Mirror are also claiming that Chelsea are finally going to get their man at right-back, with a deal for Cesar Aziplicueta close to fruition. They have offered Marseille £7 million and hope the deal will be wrapped up within 48 hours. Meanwhile yesterday the club agreed to loan out youngster Sam Hutchinson to Nottingham Forest for six months, again indicating their own right-back chase could almost be over.

It was a busy day for transfers yesterday, as Newcastle tied up the deal of Vurnon Anita, Swansea signed Kyle Bartley from Arsenal, Norwich signed former Manchester City full-back Javier Garrido on loan from Lazio, and Liverpool announced the signing of Heerenveen winger Ousamma Assadi.
