Pablo Hernandez is Leeds United’s magician but is Marcelo Bielsa the one with a trick up his sleeve for next season?
Hernandez was arguably United’s best player during the 2018-19 campaign and Bielsa played him out wide for the most part.
But all this speculation about wingers indicates that the Leeds boss might plan to deploy the Spaniard a bit more centrally in advanced midfield next time around.
The Whites are linked with Ryan Kent and Helder Costa, which perhaps indicates an intention to sign wide players during the off-season.
Bielsa could have a lot of wingers at his disposal by August and if that’s the case, Hernandez could struggle to play in his usual position.
He turned 34 in April. Going forward, he will find it hard to exert the sort of energy that Bielsa demands from his players, but there’s a bit more freedom from a number 10 role and if the Argentine coach does sign some of the wide players he’s linked to, that’s where Hernandez’s future is.
Tyler Roberts did well there during the second half of last season, but the former Spain international is a better fit.
