According to a report published in Sport today, Real Madrid are interested in bringing Sergio Reguilon back from Tottenham Hotspur.

It has been reported by the Spanish publication that Madrid are considering triggering the buy-back option.

The defending Spanish champions will have to pay €45 million (£40.04 million) to Tottenham, who signed the Spain international left-back for €35 million (£31.14 million) in the summer of 2020.

This means that Spurs will actually be making a profit of €10 million (£8.90 million), which would be music to the ears of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who is a hard negotiator and is tough to deal with regarding transfers.

Of course, Reguilon will have a say, but even if Madrid do take back the left-back, it would be business well done overall for Spurs.

Reguilon is playing well at the moment and has established himself as an important player in head coach Jose Mourinho’s team.

True, from a football perspective, it would be a blow for Spurs if they lost the Spaniard at the end of the season, but Mourinho would still have options.

Ben Davies is a very good and experienced left-back, while Ryan Sessegnon is out on loan at Hoffenheim at the moment and can operate in that position.

The €10 million (£8.90 million) that Spurs would make as profit from Reguilon’s potential return to Madrid could then be invested in signing a new left-back, if Mourinho so desires.

Let’s assume that Tottenham finish in the top four of the Premier League table and are back in the Champions League next season.

It would mean that Spurs signed a player who helped them achieve their objectives and was then sold for a profit.

There are far worse situations for a football club to be in, if that were to happen for Tottenham at the end of the season.
